A Glimpse into the World of Dementia

Staff of Hamble Heights care home in Southampton experience what it feels like to have Dementia.

Hamble Heights, the leading care home in the Southampton region from Tender LifeCare, invited staff members to take part in the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT). Run by Training 2 CARE UK Ltd, the organisation of evidenced-based training to care providers, 12 staff members from Hamble Heights took the first steps into truly understanding how Dementia feels for a person living with the condition.

The Virtual Dementia Tour is the only medically and scientifically proven method to build a greater understanding of dementia through the use of patented sensory tools and instruction. It is proven to be the closest encounter for a healthy brain to experience what life is truly like for mid-range Alzheimer’s patients (stages 4-6). Invented 17 years ago by PK Beville, CEO of Second Wind Dreams, the Virtual Dementia Tour is set to change how we understand this disease.  The VDT instantly transports the trainee into what appears to be an alien world of confusion, sensory deprivation and intimidation. All of which are elements that people living with dementia experience every day.

Glenn Knight Managing Director of Training 2 CARE UK Ltd comments, “The organisation at Hamble Heights have demonstrated their commitment to really improving the lives of people with Dementia and with the amazing home and their fantastic staff that are trained to the best standards, I am confident that the lives of people in their care will continue to improve”.
