Tips on how to best care for the elderly this autumn

Overnight there has been a slight drop in temperature and the erratic downpours are enough to cause an increased risk of illness.

Here are some ways that you can keep your elderly loved ones safe this autumn:

  • Ensure your loved one has a flu vaccine. This may seem like an obvious one, but the flu virus can cause severe illness in vulnerable groups, which is why the NHS advises that the elderly should have a flu vaccine every year. The flu vaccine is free of charge to those aged 65 and over. It is therefore important to ensure the annual vaccine is received.
  • Keep warm. Take the time to reorder the elderly person’s wardrobe to allow easy access to warm clothes, but also leave a few light bits out for warmer days. Maintain a consistently warm temperature in the home and seal off any draft areas. It is also advisable to have a certified professional service carried out on your central heating system to prevent leaks or other dangers.
  • Stay hydrated. It is important to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated when the central heating is on. Water helps to promote brain function, intestinal comfort and urinary continence. It also regulates body temperature and is essential to the function of cells, tissues and organs.
  • Check windows. All windows should open and close easily. Elderly people should have access to fresh air and be able to keep out the cold.
  • Prevent falls. Keep doorways, stairwells and pathways clear of leaves and any debris as they become slippery when wet. It is also recommended to install strong lightbulbs in every room and hallway.
  • Take advantage of the harvest. Adding seasonal fruits and vegetables to your diet such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, sweet potato, pumpkin, apples, cranberries and kale can help manage diabetes, contribute to heart health and promote a healthy immune system.
