Great Oaks is visited by some new furry friends

We were excited to welcome a group of alpacas from Alpaca Adventure into the care home recently.

Our new furry friends received a tour of the care home and were introduced to our residents. It was fantastic to see their faces light up when introduced to our four-legged guests. Smiles were exchanged as everyone chatted away to the alpacas and became familiar with their unique personalities. Our residents then had the chance to stroke and have a wander outside with the alpacas in our beautiful landscaped garden.

The alpacas were very comfortable around our residents, and certainly weren’t camera shy either. Not only were they working the camera here at Great Oaks, but they are also national TV stars as they featured in an episode of Countryfile, back in December last year.

Alpaca Adventure visited us all the way from their home on a small plot of land just outside Shaftsbury. As well as Great Oaks, the alpacas have also made appearances at weddings and corporate events. They certainly travel far and wide.

Our activities coordinator, Sue Goktas, creates a varied programme of activities for our residents to suit each of their individual needs, while keeping them engaged and entertained. The visit from the alpacas proved very popular amongst our residents and was the perfect opportunity for them to take part in some pet therapy. This is very beneficial for our residents as time spent with animals has been proven to boost mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.

We can’t thank the team at Alpaca Adventure enough for taking the time to pay us a visit. They brightened everyone’s day and we look forward to welcoming them back in the future.
